PEACE Fellows, Work-Study, Internships, and Special Partnerships

The PEACE Project is an exciting and challenging opportunity for college students and graduate students in the Philadelphia area. We are seeking the most committed and enthusiastic future educators and other talented college/graduate students with a passion for rethinking education, particularly alongside traditionally under-served Philadelphia students and families within a really exciting and unique community.

The PEACE Project at Freire Charter School is an innovative educational program that offers new answers to the age-old question of how to best prepare high school students for their futures. PEACE is an exciting synthesis of effective and research-proven pedagogies. The core principles of PEACE form our acronym: Personalized, Entrepreneurial, Active, Collaborative, and Exploratory. We believe that learning is most effective when it is personalized, based in the real world, and originating from the student's interests.

College and graduate students are expected to make quick decisions with good judgment in their work with our students and staff. These are inspiring positions that often require patience, risk-taking, and problem-solving. In return, you will learn a great deal about yourself and the world of education, and be given the opportunity to have tremendous impact on our students, families, staff, and programming!

General Expectations for all college and graduate students:

  • Support high school students and their families academically and personally by having conversations, learning about their interests and aspirations, and encouraging them to strive for excellence.
  • Accept the challenge to learn new things: about the namesake of our school, our students/families/staff, and our unique educational philosophy.
  • Keep an open mind.
  • Build on your own talents to help us develop our program and move closer to our vision.
  • Demonstrate your commitment to PEACE students by showing up for all scheduled work hours. In the case of illness or emergency, college and graduate students should call in advance.
  • We ask you to enter our community with curiosity and understanding as we are constantly evolving. Ask lots of questions and do a lot of listening. Please challenge us and offer as much constructive feedback as possible so that you're never holding back your thoughts and ideas, but please try to have a deep understanding of our context and philosophy first.
  • According to state and federal law, all adults who work with our students - including college and graduate students - must pass a criminal background check, child abuse clearance, and fingerprinting. This is non-negotiable. We apologize for this inconvenience and hope you are able to empathize with its rationale. These clearances do cost $60.00 and it is your responsibility to cover the costs. That said, we never want this financial burden to prevent a talented person from joining our community. In the rare case that these costs are completely prohibitive, please contact Sara or Brett and we will do our best to subsidize the fees when possible given need.

PEACE Fellows: Morning Fellows, After-school Fellows, Seminar Support Fellows, and Special Projects Fellows

  • The PEACE Project is seeking at least 15 PEACE Fellows (undergraduates and graduate students) to guide high school students academically by supporting them in their academic work, development of skills, and research. In addition, PEACE Fellows will work closely with our three facilitators (or teachers) as support for project design, curriculum development, and general assistance as needed. We are also open to innovative and experienced Fellows to work in leading other projects and programs.
  • Our students' skills and interests vary greatly, so the PEACE Fellows will be essential in our goal of more authentically and effectively personalizing each student's education.
  • The building of community and relationships are central to the role of Fellows. We seek for you to connect with the students, encourage them, support them, identify their needs, challenge them, and grow with them.
  • PEACE Fellows will be trained during their employment. There will also be ongoing monthly forums in order to better reflect upon the integration of educational theory and practice.
  • Commitment is more important than experience!
  • Fellows work with PEACE students during select weekdays.
  • Availability requirement: Please note that we prefer our fellows to be able to come during the same shift on multiple days. That said, if you bring talent and commitment then we will try to be flexible, when possible, to meet your needs. We realize that you are busy and need flexibility for your studies, but consistency is very important for PEACE Fellows.
  • There are the four available shifts: 8:00am - 10:00am, 10:00am - noon, noon - 3:00, and 3:00 - 5:00. You may work back-to-back shifts for a longer work period. Though we hope you will be able to work with us both semesters, we do ask for a minimum of a full semester commitment.
  • Morning Fellows must be able to commit to at least one of these time options, including a 30-minute weekly conference call at a time of collective availability:

    • Hours and projects determined individually.
  • The amount of hours each Fellow works per week varies and is flexible.
  • Work-study funding is highly-preferred. We have a very limited budget for those who do not receive work-study funding. We try to set our wages at the most competitive rate as is possible.
  • Applicants of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

General Program Assistants

  • The PEACE Project is a great site for work-study students.
  • Some work-study students come to us because they aspire to be Fellows and/or future educators. Other work-study students come to us because they are committed to our students' education, but it may not be a future career goal. We are excited to work with both types of students.
  • Work-study students work in a variety of capacities. Some tutor students, others support our staff through administrative tasks. Some lead basketball games, others problem-solve computer issues. Many things are possible, and we encourage you to both serve our needs as well as propose your own ideas.
  • Commitment is more important than experience!
  • Work-study students work with PEACE students during weekdays.
